VET ENERGY Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is the essential component of a fuel cell that facilitates the electrochemical reaction for electron separation. On the anode side, the fuel (like hydrogen or methanol) diffuses through the membrane and combines with an oxidant (oxygen or air) on the cathode side. This reaction results in the transfer of electrons from the fuel to the oxidant. Catalysts on both sides enable the reactions, while the membrane selectively allows the passage of protons while maintaining gas separation. This maintains cell potential, allowing for the extraction of current and the production of electricity.


The typical Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) consists of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM), two catalyst layers, and two Gas Diffusion Layers (GDL). Due to this composition, an MEA with this configuration is referred to as a 5-layer MEA. Another alternative version of the MEA is the 3-layer MEA, which consists of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane with catalyst layers applied to the positive and negative electrodes. This type of MEA is also known as a Catalyst Coated Membrane (CCM). The diagram illustrates the differences between these two types of MEAs in a polygonal environment.
