Hera and Snam have been awarded 195 million euros (US $2.13 billion) by the regional Council of Emilia-Romagna for the creation of a green hydrogen production center in the Italian city of Modena, according to Hydrogen Future. The money, obtained through the National Recovery and Resilience Program, will help develop a 6MW solar power station and be connected to an electrolytic cell to produce more than 400 tons of hydrogen per year.

Dubbed "Igro Mo," the project is planned for the via Caruso disused landfill in the city of Modena, with an estimated total project value of 2.08 billion euros ($2.268 billion). The hydrogen produced by the project will fuel emissions reductions by local public transport companies and the industrial sector, and will form part of Hera's role as the project lead company. Its subsidiary Herambietne will be responsible for the construction of the solar power station, while Snam will be responsible for the construction of the hydrogen production plant.

"This is the first and important step in the development of the green hydrogen value chain, for which our group is laying the foundation to become a significant player in this industry." "This project demonstrates Hera's commitment to build partnerships with companies and communities in the energy transition to make a positive impact on the environment, economy and local area," said Hera Group CEO Orcio.

"For Snam, IdrogeMO is the first Green Hydrogen Valley project focused on industrial applications and hydrogen transport, which is one of the main objectives of the EU Energy Transition," said Stefano Vinni, CEO of Snam Group. We will be the manager of the hydrogen production facility in this project, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna region, one of the country's important industrial regions, and local partners such as Hera."
