2023-04-17

According to Korean media, BMW's first hydrogen fuel cell car iX5 took reporters for a spin at the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Energy Day press conference in Incheon, South Korea, on Tuesday (April 11).

After four years of development, BMW launched its iX5 global pilot fleet of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in May, and the pilot model is now on the road around the world to gain experience ahead of the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs).

BMW's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle iX5 can provide a quiet and smooth driving experience comparable to other electric vehicles currently on the market, according to Korean media reports. It can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour in just six seconds. The speed reaches 180 kilometers per hour and the total power output is 295 kilowatts or 401 horsepower. BMW's iX5 hydrogen fuel cell car has a range of 500 kilometers and a hydrogen storage tank that can store 6 kilograms of hydrogen.

Data show that the BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle integrates the hydrogen fuel cell technology and the fifth generation BMW eDrive electric drive technology. The drive system is composed of two hydrogen storage tanks, a fuel cell and a motor. The hydrogen needed to supply the fuel cells is stored in two 700PA pressure tanks made of a carbon-fiber enhanced composite material; The BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has a maximum range of 504km in WLTP (Global Uniform Light Vehicle Testing Program), and takes only 3-4 minutes to fill the hydrogen storage tank.

In addition, according to the official website of BMW, nearly 100 BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle pilot fleet will be in the global vehicle demonstration and trial, pilot fleet will come to China this year, to carry out a series of promotion activities for the media and the public.

Shao Bin, president of BMW (China) Automotive Trading Co., LTD., said in the public event that in the future, BMW is looking forward to promoting the further integration of the automobile industry and the energy industry, accelerating the layout and construction of new energy infrastructure, and maintaining technological openness, joining hands with the upstream and downstream industrial chain, embracing green energy together, and carrying out green transformation.
