The French government is funding 175 million euros to create a hydrogen ecosystem

2023-05-24

The French government has announced 175 million euros (US $188 million) in funding for an existing hydrogen subsidy program to cover the cost of equipment for hydrogen production, storage, transport, processing and application, with a focus on building hydrogen transport infrastructure.

The Territorial Hydrogen Ecosystems programme, run by ADEME, the French environment and energy management agency, has provided more than 320 million euros in support to 35 hydrogen hubs since its launch in 2018.

Once the project is fully operational, it will produce 8,400 tons of hydrogen a year, 91 percent of which will be used to power buses, trucks and municipal garbage trucks. ADEME expects these projects to reduce CO2 emissions by 130,000 tons per year.

In the new round of subsidies, the project will be considered in the following three aspects:

1) A new ecosystem dominated by industry

2) A new ecosystem based on transportation

3) New transportation uses extend existing ecosystems

The deadline for application is September 15, 2023.

In February 2023, France announced a second project tender for ADEME to be launched in 2020, awarding a total of 126 million euros to 14 projects.
