The University of Sheffield is poised to become the UK's largest producer of green hydrogen

2023-08-24

The Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield is preparing to launch a new hydrogen production facility by electrolyzing water to develop and test a new hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel. With this new production facility, the University of Sheffield will continue to drive the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and is expected to become the largest green hydrogen producer in the UK.

The green hydrogen cell using a proton exchange membrane is the latest product from IMI Remosa's IMI VIVO cell and is installed at the University of Sheffield's Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation Centre, the UK's first development, testing and certification facility. With this new cell, the University of Sheffield was able to produce 140 cubic metres (standard state) of green hydrogen per hour, with a total storage capacity of 1,450 cubic metres, equivalent to the electricity needed to power 200 homes.
