Union ministers attend the rolling off of India's first green hydrogen fuel cell bus

Fuel cells are significantly more efficient than other mobility solutions and offer distinct advantages over battery-powered vehicles, such as longer driving range and shorter refueling times.

Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Oil and Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs, will unveil India's first green hydrogen fuel cell bus at Kartavya Path in Delhi on September 25.

The Ministry of Oil and Gas press release said green hydrogen produced using renewable energy has the potential to play a key role in a low-carbon and self-reliant economic path.

It offers the prospect of harnessing abundant renewable energy sources in the country as fuel or industrial feedstock throughout the year and across sectors.

Hydrogen is stored in cylinders on the vehicle, usually at a pressure of 350 bar. Indian Oil Corporation has launched a scientifically designed programme for operational trials of 15 fuel cell buses fuelled by green hydrogen on selected routes in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Press release.

On September 25, 2023, the first two fuel cell buses went into operation at India Gate, marking a major milestone in this effort.

The program is the first in India to provide 350 bar of green hydrogen for fuel cell buses.

In addition, Indian Oil has set up a cutting-edge distribution facility at its research and development park in Faridabad, capable of reflowing green hydrogen produced using electrolysis of solar photovoltaic panels.

When the two buses are launched as part of a long-term evaluation of the technology's performance and durability, their combined mileage will exceed 300,000 kilometers, the press release said.

The data collected through these rigorous trials will serve as a national repository to shape the future of zero-emission transport powered by green hydrogen in India.

This important initiative highlights India's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transport solutions.
