Fortescue has signed an MOU with HTEC to create Canada's first multi-purpose export plant and domestic green hydrogen supply chain

2023-12-04

Fortescue, a global green energy, metals and technology company, has partnered with Vancouver-based HTEC to explore green hydrogen supply opportunities in Canada.

The two sides will work together to explore the establishment of Canada's first domestic green hydrogen supply chain in British Columbia (BC), while combining this link with an export facility is expected to bring significant economic activity, jobs and training opportunities to Canada. Fortescue, which plans to build green hydrogen and green ammonia production plants in Prince George's, submitted a preliminary project description to the BC Environmental Assessment Office in September 2023.

According to the MoU, HTEC will purchase green hydrogen from the Fortescue production site to promote the growth of the green hydrogen transportation market in Canada.

Stephen Appleton, Fortescue's country manager for Canada, said: "This is an important step towards building Canada's first domestic green hydrogen supply chain. Thank you to the governments of Canada and British Columbia for your vision. They hope to build a globally significant green hydrogen industry. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with them to ensure that this investment takes place."

Colin Armstrong, President and CEO of HTEC, said that as the first company to build a network of hydrogen refueling stations in Canada, HTEC is excited to work with Fortescue to maximize the domestic emission reduction potential of the proposed BC production plant. The MOU will support HTEC's growing network of hydrogen filling stations, providing Canada with a reliable domestic source of zero-emission hydrogen.

The exact details of the purchase commitment will be determined in the negotiations of the final agreement and will be based on the feasibility assessment and final investment decision of the parties on the production plant and HTEC's network of hydrogen refueling stations in BC.

Both sides are committed to developing the Canadian market and maximizing the project's domestic emission reduction potential in Canada. The project, which is already underway, aims to build strategic partnerships with utilities, heavy industry, fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers and technology providers to ensure that all key elements of the hydrogen value chain can support the collaboration.
