Stellantis joint venture Symbio builds Europe's largest hydrogen fuel cell plant

2023-12-11

According to foreign media reports, Symbio, a joint venture hydrogen fuel cell company of Stellantis, Feria and Michelin, has launched a joint venture in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France. The ne-Alpes region has opened Europe's largest hydrogen fuel cell plant and inaugurated the new facility.

Symbio said in a statement on Dec. 5 that the new plant, called SymphonHy, will currently be able to produce 16,000 hydrogen fuel cell systems per year and increase that capacity to 50,000 per year by 2026. Fuel cells use the chemical energy of hydrogen or other fuels to generate electricity. When hydrogen is used, the only by-products are electricity, water and heat.

Stellantis launched hydrogen-powered midsize vans under the Citroen, Opel/Vauxhall and Peugeot brands in 2021, and plans to expand its hydrogen-powered offerings to large vans in Europe in 2024 and in the United States in 2025, with the possibility of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. The hydrogen-powered vans it sells in Europe are made at Opel's plant in Russelsheim, Germany.

"With Symbio-supplied fuel cells, Stellantis will continue to expand its range of hydrogen-powered products, offering hydrogen-powered large vans, Ram pickups and heavy-duty trucks for the North American market, in addition to the mid-size vans already launched in Europe," Stellantis said in a statement.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares added that Symbio's hydrogen fuel cell plant "is an important milestone, as hydrogen power is part of the multiple technologies we offer our light commercial vehicle customers."

SymphonHy is part of the HyMotive project, which is backed by the European Union and the French government at a cost of €1 billion and is expected to support 1,000 jobs.
