New progress announced for Australia's first clean hydrogen energy centre

Australia has announced new developments in its first clean hydrogen energy centre.

The South Australian government is investing $593 million to accelerate the development of the first clean hydrogen centre and has signed a partnership development agreement with five companies.

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and billions of dollars of investment into the South Australian economy.

The Australian federal government and the Western Australian state Government have finalized a $70 million ($45.8 million) investment each to build a hydrogen energy center in the Pilbara region of northern Western Australia, which is scheduled to be operational by mid-2028.

In recent years, under the guidance of the top-level design of hydrogen energy development, Australia has promoted the pace of hydrogen energy development. In November 2019, Australia released its National Hydrogen Strategy, pointing out that it aims to become a major player in the global hydrogen industry by 2030, and reach 30 million tons of green hydrogen production capacity by 2050.

In September 2020, Australia released its first low-carbon technology emissions statement, announcing a $1.9 billion investment plan in new energy technologies, including the construction of the country's first hydrogen export hub. In December 2021, the Australian Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources released the "2021 Hydrogen Energy Status", pointing out that the promotion of hydrogen energy around 2030 to achieve large-scale production.
