Toyota PEM electrolyzer is about to be mass-produced!

2024-03-21

On February 5, Japan's Chiyoda Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation signed a strategic partnership and basic cooperation agreement. The two parties will jointly develop large-scale electrolysis systems. Toyota said the collaboration will enable large-scale production of its own 5-MW PEM electrolyser. The electrolyzer device is based on the same battery pack as the fuel cell Toyota uses in its hydrogen-powered Mirai car.

The two companies announced: "Toyota's fuel cell technology and Chiyoda's processing plant design technology and large-scale factory construction technology will be used to develop a competitive large-scale electrolyzer system, thereby realizing the production and large-scale production of electrolyzers." Produce."

The 5MW electrolyser machines, each covering 2.5 x 6 meters and capable of producing 100 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, will be combined to form a "standard package" that allows the construction of large-scale electrolysis systems.

The two companies did not reveal any details on when the plant would be built or its capacity, saying only that the "electrolysis system" would be introduced at Toyota's Honshu plant (its oldest) in 2025 and then "expanded to the 10MW level in the future and used for Validation and Development”.

This suggests that factory construction is at least two years away.

According to reports, in March 2023, Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it would develop PEM electrolysis hydrogen production equipment in the field of hydrogen energy. The equipment development is based on fuel cell (FC) stacks and other Mirai technologies, which can electrolyze hydrogen from water. It is reported that the equipment was put into use in a factory of DENSO Fukushima Company in March this year, and the factory will serve as an implementation site for the technology to promote its widespread use in the future.
