Exporting hydrogen to Europe through Rotterdam port

2023-04-24

Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands are building advanced relations and cooperation in a number of areas, with energy and clean hydrogen at the top of the list. Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman and Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra met to discuss the possibility of making the port of Rotterdam a gateway for Saudi Arabia to export clean hydrogen to Europe.

The meeting also touched on the Kingdom's efforts in clean energy and climate change through its local and regional initiatives, the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. The Dutch minister also met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Fahan to review Saudi-Dutch relations. The ministers discussed current regional and international developments, including the Russian-Ukrainian war and the efforts of the international community to find a political solution to achieve peace and security.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Saud Satty also attended the meeting. The Saudi and Dutch foreign ministers have met several times over the years, most recently on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany on February 18.

On May 31, Prince Faisal and Hoekstra spoke by telephone to discuss international efforts to salvage the oil tanker FSO Safe, which is anchored 4.8 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen's Hodeida province in deteriorating conditions that could lead to a massive tsunami, oil spill or explosion.
