Nicola will supply hydrogen-powered cars to Canada

2023-05-04

Nicola announced the sale of its battery electric vehicle (BEV) and hydrogen fuel cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) to the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA).

The sale secures the company's expansion into Alberta, Canada, where AMTA combines its purchase with refueling support to move fuel machines through the use of Nicola's hydrogen fuel.

AMTA expects to receive Nikola Tre BEV this week and Nikola Tre FCEV by the end of 2023, which will be included in AMTA's hydrogen-fueled commercial vehicle demonstration program.

Launched earlier this year, the program provides Alberta operators with the opportunity to use and test a Level 8 vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel. The trials will evaluate the performance of hydrogen-powered vehicles on Alberta roads, in payload and weather conditions, while addressing challenges of fuel cell reliability, infrastructure, vehicle cost and maintenance.

"We are excited to bring these Nicola trucks to Alberta and begin collecting performance data to increase awareness of this advanced technology, promote early adoption and build industry confidence in this innovative technology," said Doug Paisley, Chairman of the AMTA Board of Directors.

Michael Lohscheller, President and CEO of Nikolai, added, "We expect Nikolai to keep pace with leaders such as AMTA and accelerate these important market adoption and regulatory policies. Nicola's zero emission truck and its plan to build hydrogen infrastructure are in line with Canada's goals and support our fair share of publicly announced 300 metric ton hydrogen supply plans for 60 hydrogen filling stations in North America by 2026. This partnership is just the beginning of bringing hundreds of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to Alberta and Canada."

Nicola's trebev has a range of up to 530km and claims to be one of the longest battery-electric zero-emission Class 8 tractors. The Nikola Tre FCEV has a range of up to 800km and is expected to take 20 minutes to refuel. The hydrogenator is a heavy-duty, 700 bar (10,000psi) hydrogen fuel hydrogenator capable of refilling FCEVs directly.
