Element 2 has planning permission for public hydrogenation stations in the UK

Element 2 has already received planning approval for two permanent hydrogen filling stations by Exelby Services on the A1(M) and M6 motorways in the UK.

The refueling stations, to be built on Coneygarth and Golden Fleece services, are planned to have a daily retail capacity of 1 to 2.5 tonnes, operate 24/7 and be capable of providing 50 refilling trips per day for heavy goods vehicles (HGVS).

The stations will be open to the public for light commercial and passenger vehicles as well as heavy goods vehicles.


Sustainability is "at the heart" of the approved design, according to Element 2, adding that every site environment and local ecosystem benefits from the building, not least by reducing emissions through material selection and low-energy manufacturing.

The announcement comes just 10 months after Element 2 announced the UK's "first" public hydrogenation station in partnership with Exelby Services.

Rob Exelby, managing director of Exelby Services, commented: "We are delighted that planning permission has been granted for the Element 2 hydrogenation station. We are supporting a range of investments to support the UK's transport industry to achieve net zero and plan to integrate hydrogen into our frontier operations across the country."

In 2021, Element 2 announced that it wanted to deploy more than 800 hydrogen pumps in the UK by 2027 and 2,000 by 2030.

"Element 2 has been a driving force in the UK's energy transition over the past two years, building a network of hydrogen filling stations and regularly supplying fuel cell grade hydrogen to commercial fleet owners, operators and engine testing facilities."
