2023-10-11

According to the Saudi Press Agency, Saudi Railways (hereinafter: SAR) announced the signing of the agreement with French train company Alstom.

SAR will conduct operational tests and necessary studies to adapt the hydrogen train to the Saudi environment and prepare it for future operation.

Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Transport and Logistics and chairman of SAR's Board of directors, said that this is part of the kingdom's plan to achieve a sustainable transportation system, and the hydrogen trains will feature the latest smart technology.

He said SAR is committed to playing a leading role in the realization of the Saudi Green Initiative, which stems from the Saudi Vision 2030, which stipulates to increase the country's reliance on clean energy, reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment.

Hydrogen, which can be produced through renewable energy and natural gas, is a key fuel for the transition to a low-carbon world in the coming years.

SAR's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Bashar Al-Malik, stressed the company's commitment to implementing initiatives that are in line with the Saudi national transportation and logistics strategy.

He said that hydrogen trains are one of the most important innovations in sustainable transport, and the energy required for the operation of hydrogen trains is carbon-free. This makes hydrogen trains an attractive option to drive sustainable energy, with a positive impact on the environment, the economy and future generations.
