PlugPower supplied 280MW electrolyzer for the Danish aviation synthetic fuel project

2023-10-16

U.S. electrolyzer producer Plug Power will supply the PEM electrolyzer system to Arcadia eFuels for Denmark's signature aviation synthetic fuel project.

The PEM electrolyzer will produce 120 tonnes of green hydrogen per day at Arcadia's Woldingburg plant in Denmark, with an annual capacity of 43,800 tonnes. The green hydrogen is then combined with the captured CO2 to make a synthetic gas (syngas). The syngas is converted into aviation synthetic fuel by the Fischer-Tropsch process. Arcadia aims to produce 80 million tons of synthetic aviation fuel per year.

The ReFuelEU Aviation Directive, adopted by EU member states, stipulates that by 2030, 1.2% of the fuel used by aircraft leaving EU airports must be synthetic aviation fuel derived from green hydrogen, creating a huge market for Arcadia. In fact, the Vordingborg project alone can meet almost half of the market demand.

Arcadia expects to make a final investment decision in mid-2024, with a commercial operational date expected before the end of 2026.

Andy Marsh, Chief Executive Officer of Plug Power, said the partnership with Arcadia eFuels marks Plug Power's emergence as the preferred supplier of green hydrogen solutions for hydrocarbon fuels.
