Toyota hydrogen fuel cell module will be used in the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games

2023-10-30

Toyota has announced that its hydrogen fuel cell module will be used as part of its global mobility partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). They will be installed on 10 converted passenger cars to replace diesel engines with zero-emission technology.

The buses will transport more than 5,000 visitors to Paris for the Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will transport tourists during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris using buses modified with hydrogen fuel cells as part of their guest program. This time will allow the h2 powered bus to complete its full service cycle, providing services to public and private customers into the Ile-de-France region.

Toyota will provide conversion modules for 10 used Iveco buses to GCK, a group of industrial companies that provide technology solutions for decarbonizing transport. In this way, they will become hydrogen-powered electric vehicles with zero carbon emissions.

Once converted, the buses will be purchased by French company B.E. Green. The company will incorporate the vehicles into its existing fleet after the Games.

At the same time, the first coach using the module was unveiled at the RNTP transport event in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The bus was converted to hydrogen fuel cell, replacing the original engine and gearbox

During the refit, the diesel engine and gearbox at the front of the bus were replaced. Instead, the buses will use batteries, 370-kilowatt electric motors and Toyota TFC2-B hydrogen fuel cell modules.

Through this collaborative and innovative approach, the automaker has demonstrated the flexibility of all its hydrogen fuel cell power modules in converting conventional engines to zero-carbon emission alternatives.

A step towards carbon neutrality

"Converting buses to fuel cell electric vehicles is another important step towards carbon neutrality in the transport sector. This collaboration is a perfect illustration of how hydrogen applications can benefit all business stakeholders and be a long-term solution, "said Thiebault Paquet, Vice President, Hydrogen Plant Europe, Toyota Motor.

"All 10 fuel cell buses will allow Toyota to transport guests with zero tailpipe emissions during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris." We would like to thank our partners for their joint efforts - to be pioneers and promoters of the hydrogen society and to make this possible ahead of the Olympics."
