Daimler Trucks, in partnership with Masdar, plans to export green liquid hydrogen to Europe

2024-01-29

Daimler Trucks and Masdar announced that they will explore the feasibility of exporting liquid green hydrogen from the United Arab Emirates to Europe.

According to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies, the two companies will evaluate the export of hydrogen and plan to deliver it to Europe by 2030.

Masdar, ABU Dhabi's future energy company, has invested or committed to more than $30 billion in projects worldwide and has ambitious growth plans. Masdar plans to reach 100GW by 2030. The current total power generation capacity is more than 20GW.

Daimler Trucks aims to achieve a dual-track strategy powered by hydrogen and pure battery power, demonstrating the feasibility of liquid hydrogen applications on the road. The Daimler Mercedes-Benz GenH2 prototype truck has completed a journey of 1,047 km in liquid hydrogen applications in Germany.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said the agreement is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from road freight transport in Europe, supporting the UAE to become a leader in the low hydrocarbon market by 2031. This is in line with Masdar's 'smart-early-mover' approach to delivering projects to strategic partners around the world.

Daimler Trucks is committed to supporting the Paris Climate Agreement by aiming to achieve CO2 neutrality in the driving operations of all trucks and buses by 2039 in its core global markets (Europe, the United States and Japan). The agreement supports the UAE's ambition to become a major producer and supplier in the low hydrocarbon market by 2031, as well as the European Green Deal emission reduction targets.
